b. 1933, San Juan, Puerto Rico | lives and works in Long Island, New York, and Vieques, Puerto Rico

In the later 1960s, Rafael Ferrer pioneered Conceptual and process-oriented actions and environments, in which he combined ephemeral, industrial, and natural materials. In his work Artforhum, the single word of the title reads as a pun on Artforum, the name of the iconic art-industry journal. First appearing in the form of a neon sign that was shown in the artist’s 1971 solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Ferrer has returned to it as a way to proclaim his discontent with the status of art as a product made by and for an elite.
